No matter your age, the first day of school can seem a little daunting! You have made the decision to travel to a new country and start a new school where you do not know anybody. Here is what you must remember – you are not alone! All of your new classmates will be feeling the same as you, and it is our job to make you feel as welcome and comfortable as possible. Here are some tips on what you can do to make the most of your first day:
Arrive on time
It seems obvious, but it will make your first day much easier if you arrive on time. Check your welcome information the day before to make sure you know where you should go and what time you should get here. Make sure you give yourself lots of time to get there too. If you have time the day before, why not try out the journey, so you know how long it takes?
Be open and friendly – it’s everyone’s first day!
It is normal to feel nervous on your first day in a new environment. So, don’t be afraid to smile and introduce yourself to new people. You do not have to speak perfect English; you could start with something simple like, “Hi, my name is Matteo, I am from Italy. Where are you from?”
One of the best things about ELC Bristol is that you will be able to make friends with people from all over the world and they will help you to learn and grow. Studying at ELC Bristol is not just about improving your English; it is about opening your hearts and minds to the wider world.
The first day of school – keep calm!
When you first arrive at school, you will take a short English test. The test is just to make sure that we place you in the perfect class for your level – it is not to make you stressed! Keep calm and ask questions if you do not understand. Once you have taken your test, you will have a welcome talk from some of the key members of staff. During these talks, we will explain what your life will be like at school and give some great tips and advice on how to have the best time and stay safe. Sometimes, we will also try and tell some jokes which are not very funny!
Be prepared
Your teachers will give you all your course materials, but there are some things you will need to bring yourself. Make sure you have a bag to carry your school materials and enough pens and pencils for your lessons. If you can, bring a reusable water bottle, it is important to drink enough water, and there are places you can refill your bottle in our buildings. Bring an umbrella! The weather in Bristol is unpredictable and can go from sunny to raining in a short time. Finally, dress for a multicultural environment and wear comfortable shoes. We will take you on a short walk around the local area where you can buy your lunch on the first day. We will also point out other useful places such as where you can take money out and where to meet for social programme activities!
Speak English from your first day at school!
Finally, make the most of all the opportunities to learn English that you can from your very first day. Read everything and anything that interests you. Speak to your classmates and teachers inside and outside of the classroom. You could even listen to a podcast or story in English on your first walk to school!
