Online Lessons

Small Group Lessons on Zoom

Online classes at ELC Bristol are for students who would like to study one or two hours per week in a small, friendly group. These lessons give you plenty of opportunity to spend time communicating to improve your English. We offer classes of General English from A2 (Elementary) to C1 (Advanced); we also deliver conversation classes, IELTS classes and Business English. All lessons take place on Zoom.

General English Lessons

These classes are for students with an elementary level (A2) to advanced level (C1) of English. These are the same courses as the face-to-face classes we deliver in Bristol. We use communicative methods to teach small groups of students who are studying at the same level. The classes follow a coursebook which is presented by the teacher sharing their screen on Zoom. Additionally, we use the very best coursebooks from Oxford University Press and National Geographic (students can buy the books if they wish but it is not necessary). Teachers will also share other materials through the chat box in Zoom. The classes are very communicative and there is a focus on grammar, vocabulary , speaking, listening and reading.

IELTS (Academic)

This course is suitable specifically for students who want to study in English at university (either in the UK or in their country) and are taking the IELTS exam. The classes use materials from the best IELTS coursebooks such as Ready for IELTS and Mindset for IELTS. Teachers also use their own materials which they will share through the Zoom chat box. These classes are very communicative and will prepare students for the four skills in the exam (reading, writing, speaking and listening).

Students should be at least Upper-Intermediate (B2) level before joining the Academic IELTS classes. Learners will often need an IELTS score of around 6.5 to enter a British university and the classes are for students who are aiming for up to a 6.5 or 7 in the exam. Another bonus is that the main teacher for this course is an official IELTS examiner!

Conversation Class

What is a conversation class? English conversation classes provide an opportunity for students to practise their English communication skills in a safe and supportive environment. These lessons are usually taken by students who want to improve their speaking and listening skills. The classes typically involve discussions on topics of interest which are popular with the particular group. The teachers will ask the students which subjects they are interested in (a needs analysis) and deliver lessons based on this conversation. There will be role-playing and group work, sometimes using breakout rooms on Zoom.

Students will have plenty of opportunity to practise and improve their speaking skills while receiving grammar and vocabulary input. The teachers will monitor all activities (including in breakout rooms) and provide regular feedback and correction.

Business Class

These classes are for business people who need English for their work or students that are interested in studying Business English. The lessons will normally be built around a final communicative task, for example, a role play of a business meeting or a mini-presentation, with the rest of the session preparing students for this through discussions, vocabulary input, listening practice, and communicative activities.

Each lesson will focus on one theme, such as:

• Presentations
• Negotiating
• Writing emails
• Meetings
• Business grammar
• Networking and socialising
• Business and Finance vocabulary

The course materials come from from authentic sources such as podcasts, talks, video and case studies as well as high-quality business English resource books.
