Safeguarding and emergency training

3 sessions run by John Duncan – ELC's DSL who had been trained by Kevin O’Donnell in EUK’s training session: Emergency Planning and Crisis Management

  • 1 The Avenue - Year roundTeachers
  • Worcester Road - Summer teachers x9
  • Admin staff

Background

All staff have have had Safeguarding training and new staff have had emergency training at inductions.

Session

Quizzed them about number of ELC staff on Safeguarding team: 5 – named them – outlined their responsibilities. Social Programme Manager is also trained in Safeguarding. Andrew Varney is responsible for risk assessments. Informed them about Emergency Management team members: 5 named them

Safeguarding

Asked them to name the under 18s in their class – how can they put names to faces (photos up in staff rooms). Did they know any NB information – did they know the under 18s in lesson 2 and 3? If they have a safeguarding concern about another member of staff, who do they report it to? The Headmaster - Tim Green.

Reminded them about Code of Conduct - they all have to sign off the form. Can they have a beer when overseeing the Conversation Club? Not if any U18s are present.

Things to remember – if they have any non-attenders in their class, inform reception after 15 minutes, not being left alone in a room, not sharing photos, no personal contact details – any other?

Ear to the ground – if they hear about U18s going to another city – need for parental permission.

Materials – if concerned about suitability – advise DOSs or senior teachers.

Emergency procedures

Talked about the emergency management team and our roles – 4 control centres each with Emergency plan with useful contacts and guidance about what to do in a variety of situations– Emergency plan files kept in Director's offices and in Director's Principal's and Vice Principal's homes.

Talked about the fire alarm and procedures /muster points etc.

Off-site emergencies

On excursions we now have report with all students photos and emergency contact details and we are able to contact them simultaneously through the database which could save vital time in an emergency. They call the ELC Emergency Number and that person will simultaneously text everyone on the excursion/activity.

Check list of things to do by activity leaders before setting off on a trip

We always have an alternative meeting point (in case it is not safe to go to the original meeting point).

Students given flyers with safety guidance – run, hide, tell
